WOMEN’S INSTITUTE CHRISTMAS MEETING AT NIREAHA (“Times-Age” Special.) The hall was beautifully arranged with flowers for the Christmas meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute, which took the form of a social gathering. Each member invited a guest and a very enjoyable time was spent Visitors of the Rongokokako Women’s Institute were also present. Two new members, Mesdames Searancke and Davis,- were welcomed. Letters were read from Mesdames Hodder, Petersen and Hooper, thanking the institute for donations towards the prisoner-of-war parcels fund. As the money boxes are unprocurable, Mrs Mills was presented with a sum of money for her little son with which to open a bank account. Mrs Hawkins rendered a song excellently, the accompaniment being played by Mrs Terry. Those present were then handed a bag of flowers and piece of wool to make a shoulder spray in 10 minutes. These were judged by Mesdames Winter and O’Neil, the winners being Mrs Thomasen 1, Mrs Hawkins 2, Mrs W. W. Drysdale 3. Next on the programme was a tasting competition consisting of 16 powders, all to be found in the average home. This was won by Mrs Wilken. Miss V. Drysdale won the names competition. The winners of the monthly competitions were: Christmas cake, Mrs A. fJbusten 1,2 and 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Hawkins 1, Mrs W. W. Drysdale 2, Mrs P. Wilkins 3. Small bloom, Mrs J. Drysdale 1, Mrs A. Houston 2, Mrs Wilkin 3. Large bloom, Mrs Terry 1, Mrs J. Drysdale 2, Mrs A. Houston 3. The judges were Mesdames B. and M. Morriss.

A beautiful display of faggoting and patchwork articles by Mrs Carseldine was greatly admired. After afternoon tea had been dispensed the heavily laden produce table was auctioned, the sum realised being £3 4s 7d. This will be added to the soldiers’ parcel fund. The next meeting will be in February. when the competitions will be-3 pods of peas, 3 best hen eggs, vegetables and blooms. The hostesses were Mesdames Duncan and Thomasen, assisted by members.

PROTEST MEETING CLOSING OF FACTORY. A meeting of protest against the closing of the Eketahuna Dairy Factory has been called for Wednesday night by the Mayor of Eketahuna, Mr W. Olsen. Invitations to attend the meeting had been extended to the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser), the Hon. Ben Roberts, Mr G. H. Hackley, M.P., and Mr Singleton, Director of the Dairy Division. The meeting will be held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. Citizenship Essay The “Taratahi” competition for the best essay on citizenship has been won this year by Muriel Gray. Connie McAlister was second and Alison Houlbrooke third., Junior Red Cross Shop Day The proceeds from a shop day organised by .the Junior Red Cross of the secondary department of the Eketahuna District High School amounted to £lO 12s. Allocations have been made as follows:—R.S.A. premises appeal, £2 10s; Burwood Hospital, Christchurch, £2 10s; Eketahuna Patriotic Society for soldiers’ parcels, £2 10s; orphanages, £2 2s. Personal Items Mr lan Pocock, of the staff of the Tararua Electric Power Board, Eketahuna, has been successful in passing his final examination for a wirenian s certificate. Miss McCormick, of the Health Department, Wellington, who has been relieving Miss Dorset for the past week, returned to Wellington yesterday, accompanied by her mother.
