VISITING RUSSIA

ARCHBISHOP OF YORK AT HEAD OF CHURCH DELEGATION. STRICTLY ECCLESIASTICAL GESTURE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, September 15. The Archbishop of York, Dr Cyril ’ Garbett, has arrived in Moscow. He is visiting Russia as head of a Church of England delegation to express the Church of England’s sympathy for the sufferings of the Orthodox Church in Russia at the hands of the Germans.' The visit is strictly ecclesiastical and non-political. The Orthodox Church and not the Soviet Government, extended an invitation. Neither the Soviet nor the British Government is in any way involved. The Dean of Canterbury, Dr Hewlett Johnson, said the visit will be welcomed as a milestone on the road to British and Russian understanding. It is a fitting gesture on behalf of the Anglican Church, following on the recent evidence of Stalin’s religious toleration. '
