ATTACKS ON OCCUPIED FRANCE RUBBER FACTORY BOMBED HEAVILY. FLYING FORTRESSES BLAST NAVAL INSTALLATIONS. LONDON, September 16. Bombers of the United States Air Force, escorted by British Spitfires, attacked two enemy airfields in Northern France this evening. Earlier today, American Flying Fortresses, escorted by Thunderbolts, attacked naval installations on the French Atlantic coast. Last night, R.A.F. bombers attacked a rubber factory in Central France. It was a heavy attack. Thick clouds prevented full observation but the results were reported to be good. FIRST FOR WEEKS NIGHT ALERT IN LONDON. FAMOUS ANNIVERSARY RECALLED. (By Telegraph—JPress Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 15. Bombs were dropped in London during the first night alert since August 23. Anti-aircraft defences put up a barrage and the raiders soon disappeared. This is exactly the date on which the Germans in 1940 attacked London with nearly 500 planes, of which 188 were destroyed and nearly others probably lost. This victory decided the Battle of Britain. Raiders were also over south-east coastal areas tonight. Bombs were dropped in two towns. British and American planes attacked Paris and its suburbs this evening, according to the Paris radio, which stated that several planes were shot down in flames by the ground defences. There were many casualties. A United States Army Air Force communique states that Flying Fortresses attacked aircraft installations _ in the vicinity of Paris. Fortresses, Liberators and Marauders also attacked scattered, airfields in France. ATTACK AT DUSK FIRST MADE BY AMERICAN HEAVY BOMBERS. A Flying Fortress raid against enemy targets in France last night was the first in which heavy American bombers attacked at dusk and travelled homeward to land in darkness. Axis sources claim that 137 persons were killed and 435 injured in the Paris area.
