Supplies of buttons, with the symbol V for Victory in the centre and the words, 3rd Liberty Loan Subscriber, around the border, have arrived in Masterton for distribution to subscribers. This step has been taken by the Masterton Liberty Loan Committee with a view to increasing the number of investors in the Liberty Loan, as the success of the loan' depends on the largest possible number of subscribers investing in it. The Masterton Committee asks for the co-operation of all subscribers, who are urged to make a point of wearing the button, as it is desired that everyone should be entitled to show this badge, as an indication that they are behind the coumntry’s war effort. The present supply of buttons is available to those who have already subscribed to the loan. They arc asked to apply for their buttons to their banker, broker or firm, whichever handled their application. Those who made application through the Post Office are requested to apply at Mr J. A. Betts’s office, where members of the W.W.S.A. have been detailed specially to issue buttons to those entitled to them, on presentation of a bond certificate or in the case of national savings depositors, of the national savings book which shows that they have deposited at least £1 since the loan was opened.

GANGSTER METHODS HOW JAPAN RAISES WAR FUNDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “This is a dreadful confession to make, I know, and one that isn’t even good for the soul. “I am the not very proud possessor of a number of Japanese war bonds.”—A Melbourne audience heard this from Dr. Peter V. Russo, former Professor of English at the Imperial University of Tokio. The story of how he obtained these bonds (states the National War Loan Committee) is a vivid reminder of differences in war loan appeals. Dr. Rpsso explained that after Japan commenced the war in China he received a good deal of his salary in what were called “China Incident bonds.” The pay envelope contained a small printed slip with the slogan: “Every time you cash a bond you help the enemy,” which, remarked the professor, was a gentle hint as to what he could do with them. “You might say/’ he continued, “that the only thing to have done was to go to a bank, demand payment for the bonds, and be rid of them. A Japanese school teacher I know, whose wifb was very ill and needed special medical care, once tried to cash a few bonds to raise some money. He was caught coming out of a bank by a mob of patriotic gangsters. By the time they had finished with him his family had a double funeral on its hands, for he managed’ to die just a few days before his wife did. I considered this and similar cases, and —well, I decided to keep my bonds.”
