Air Fatality.

An airman pilot under training, L/Ac. Ralph James Brownlie (father, Mr. J. Brownlie, Frasertown, Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay) lost his life in an aircraft accident near a South Island station early yesterday morning when the aircraft crashed during night flying training. Salvage of Containers. The average annual tonnage of tin consumed in toothpaste, shaving soap and other tube containers in New Zealand is 60 tons. Every tube should be handed in for salvage, as 250 of them make solder sufficient for one Blenheim bomber. These tubes are precious and must be saved. All the proceeds from the sale of tubes go to the patriotic fund. Enjoyable Dance. The dance held by the Wairarapa Interhouse Association in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, last night, proved most successful and enjoyable, the hall being crowded. The music was supplied by Mrs. Ashton’s orchestra and Mr. R. Pawson was an efficient M.C. A fox trot competition, which was judged by Miss Buelah Hirst, was won by Miss Joan Grantham and A.D.U. D. C. Howlett. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss G. Bubbers and Private C. Pedersen. Supper was served by the Interhouse girls. Closer Relations With Russia. At the monthly meeting of the Society for Closer Relations with Russia, held in Masterton this week, a lengthy discussion took place on the need of diplomatic representation between New Zealand and the U.S.S.R. The president, Mr E. J. Esler, stressed the importance of the matter. A letter was read from a New Zealand Captain in the Middle East in which the need of closer relations with Russia was emphasised. It was decided to hold a debate, at the next monthly meeting, in which four speakers would take part. A general discussion would follow. Quality of Flour. The- West Coast North Island Master Bakers’ Association carried a motion on Thursday that the association views with grave concern the very unsatisfactory condition of the flour being delivered from the emergency flour stocks, notwithstanding many assurances by the wheat flour controller that such flour would be released at regular intervals and before the quality deteriorated. It was resolved that the matter be taken up immediately with the authorities. Some brands of flour were held in the emergency stores from seven to eleven months. Unless a more satisfactory system was adopted members of the association would in future accept only flour supplied by direct shipment from the mills. It was urged that the final date of manufacture be shown on each sack of flour.
