STATE THEATRE

“BALL OF FIRE.” Commencing tonight, the modern romantic comedy, “Ball of Fire,” in which Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck are co-starred, will be shown at the State Theatre. The hilarious romance of a college professor and a night club queen is the theme of “Ball of Fire,” which is hailed as one of the funniest offerings in many years. The picture deals with the strange happenings that occur when the professor, one of a group writing a new encyclopaedia, invites the singer to visit them so he can get some firsthand information on slang for an article in the forthcoming work. The girl speedily upsets the lives of the eight professors, including that of her original sponsor, with whom she falls in love. Unfortunately, a gangster hiding from the police is also an admirer of the entertainer, and matters become highly complicated when she tries to decide which of the two men she will marry. The part of the gangster is taken by Dana Andrews, Goldwyn’s new “find,” and there is a particularly strong supporting cast.
