Exemption for Minister. An appeal against Home Guard service for the Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr A. McLagan, lodged by the Director of National Service, was adjourned sine die by the Armed Forces Appeal Board sitting at Rangiora yesterday. Intoxicated Motorist. A dental surgeon, William Guild, aged 44, was fined £25 and costs and had his driving licence cancelled for 12 months in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, for being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car on the Hutt Road near Ngahauranga at 4.45 p.m. on Wednesday. It was stated that a Main Highways Board traffic inspector had noticed Guild’s car being driven in a very erratic manner. Guild admitted the offence. Female Farm Workers. Increases of from 6s weekly to 8s 6d weekly for female farm workers are provided for in an amendment to the Agricultural Workers’ Labour Legislation Suspension Order gazetted last night. The new rates will be as follows: For dairy farm workers, first six months £2 Is plus keep, thereafter £2 8s 6d plus keep. Other farms and stations, first six months £1 16s plus keep, thereafter £2 3s 6d plus keep. American Seamen in Trouble. Two American seamen who fought off constables and civilians for several minutes before they were arrested were charged in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, yesterday with assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty. They were James Herbert Ford, ' aged 39, ' and Frank August Sundman, aged 21. There were also charges against Ford of resisting a constable and using obscene language, and against Sundman of obstructing a constable in the execution of his duty. The Magistrate, Mr J. L. Stout, fined each accused £lO on the assault charge, and convicted and discharged them on the others.

Tire Retreading. Tire retreading has been declared an essential industry. Men Released From Camp. A .-further 54 men were released from camp for farm work by the Wairarapa Armed Forces Appeal Board, at a sitting held in Masterton today. Interhcuse Association. A full committee meeting of the Masterton Interhouse Association was held this week. The date for the next Interhouse Day was fixed for Saturday, November 28, and all proceeds will be devoted to patriotic purposes. Arrangements for the marching and drill competitions are now in hand and will be completed shortly. It was decided to hold over the question of affiliation with the New Zealand Interhouse Association pending further information. Highest Scout Award. Three leading members of the Boy Scout organisation in New Zealand, Mr Hector Christie, Dominion Chief Commissioner, Miss Nancy Wilson, Dominion Commissioner for Wolf Cubs, and Mr J. R. H. Cooksey, Dominion Commissioner for Training, were presented with the Boy Scout Association’s Silver Wolf by the Governor-General yesterday morning. Sir Cyril Newall was acting in his capacity of Dominion Chief Scout. The Silver Wolf is an award for services of the most exceptional character, and is granted at the personal discretion of the Chief Scout of the British Empire, Lord Somers, and has only previously been awarded on rare occasions. At present there are no other active members of the Scout Movement in New Zealand holding this most coveted decoration.
