CARTERTON
LAW AND ORDER MEETING OF UNIT. (■“Times-Age” Special.) Constable F. J. Williams, presided over a meeting of the Law and Order Unit held in the Courthouse last evening. There were also present: Messrs C. A. Chennells (Deputy Controller), C. J. DeLacey (secretary), A. T. Murray, F. J. Rawlings, T .Merson, I. Sexton, J. O'Loughlin, J. S. Grant, G. G. Magyer, 11. E. Ward, C. E. Hatchard, C. Abbott and T. McQuilkin. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs D. 11. Jensen and W. A. Kempton. The chairman reported on the business transacted at the recent Central Committee meeting. With the approval of the Central Committee, one member was appointed a light warden. It was reported that the Central Committee had refused to make a “blanket appeal” for members, and as a result two members were advised to appeal, personally to the Man Power Committee for exemption for Home Guard service. Members were advised to have their names placed on their arm badge, in case the latter was lost. It was resolved to appoint two messengers to the unit, and that two patrols bo organised in case of emergency. The chairman expressed his appreciation as to the manner in which members had turned out for duty in the recent earthquake. Brick Works. Repair work at the Brick and Tile Company’s premises in Rutland Road is proceeding. The building was damaged to a greater extent than was at first ascertained and as a result it will be necessary to demolish a good deal of the wall right to the foundations. Personal Items. The staff of Messrs Wakelin Bros..’ flour mill, yesterday made a presentation to Mr Geo. Edge, who is leaving the district. Mr W. McPherson, on behalf of the staff, handed Mr Edge a leather suitcase, and a cushion for Mrs Edge. Mr L .H. Smart, chairman of directors, on behalf of the directors, asked Mr Edge to accept a cheque. Mr Edge returned thanks on behalf of himself and Mrs Edge. Mr and Mrs George Edwards, of Auckland, arrived yesterday to take up their residence in Carterton. Mrs) Edwards is a daughter of Mr W. Shirley, Lincoln Road, Carterton.
