TOWN IMPROVEMENTS

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S ACTIVITIES PLANTING OF FLOWERING APPLES. ANNUAL MEETING LAST NIGHT. There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Masterton Beautifying Society, which was held last night. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Dr Archer Hosking; president, Mr L. Robinson; vice-presidents, Miss F. P. Maunsell, Messrs H. E. Gardner and E. W. Pay ton; committee, Miss B. M. Kummer, Messrs F. C. Daniell, M. Davey, V. Joseph, A. Keith, J. M. Lawson, J. G. McFarlane, A. Needham, S. V. Playsted and A. J. Towns; hon treasurer, Mr S. V. Playsted; hon secretary, Mr J. M. Lawson. The annual report stated that the public had not been approached seriously for any funds and the sums on hand had been conserved as much as possible to ensure that any liabilities incurred during the remaining period of the war would be met. The society was indebted to the Masterton Borough Council for its usual generous donation of £lOO. This sum had been spent in pruning and maintenance of street, trees. Open spaces, such as the Cole-Essex Street, crossing, were not in such good order as usual. The Borough Council was experiencing great difficulty in obtaining labour to keep these plots attended to but it was hoped to give them’more attention in the ensuing year. Good progress had been, made in planting flowering apple trees, Masterton’s town flower. Cambridge Terrace and Macara Street had been planted and donations totalling 130 in all had been made to public and private schools. Forty-one had been planted in private gardens at a nominal cost of 2s Gd each. Altogether, about 210 trees had been planted and a good start made with the proposal to make Masterton well-known for the beauty of its flowering apples. Regret was expressed that no agreement was possible about the control of Memorial Park but it was hoped that satisfactory plans would be formulated for its development after the war. Douglas Park was another worthy project for the future.
