The question of appealing for balloted teachers because of the acute shortage was discussed by the Auckland Education Board yesterday, when Mr S. B. Sims, Hamilton, said that in two recent Gazettes there were vacancies for 48 teachers that attracted no applications. He gave notice to move at the next meeting to rescind the board’s previous resolution to appeal only for head teachers of schools grade four and higher and teachers of mathematics and science in secondary departments of district high schools, and to resolve that in future the board appeal for all teachers. The board’s secretary, Mr Nixon, said later that more than 500 teachers from the Auckland province were now in the fighting services.
