HOSPITAL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD YESTERDAY. USE OF WHATMAN HOME. The Wairarapa Hospital Board concluded its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. , A donatibn was received from an elderly man as a thanks offering for not having to use the hospital, with the suggestion that it should be used for providing comforts for soldiers. The board agreed that the money should be used by the Matron at her discretion for the benefit of soldier patients. The Finance Committee, with the addition of Mesdames S. Fletcher and J. Robertson, was requested to investigate the position in regard to the use of Whatman Home and report to the next meeting. It was reported that the home had now been connected with the borough drainage system. Board members made an inspection of the new emergency ward in course of erection at the Masterton Hospital and congratulated those concerned on the progress made. It was stated that the building was expected to be completed in about six weeks time. The board considered that the recent five per cent increase in old age benefits should be made payable proportionately between the board and the inmates of Buchanan Home. The increase of 6s 6d was made payable wholly to the old people. It was pointed out that the board had to bear the increase in costs. Prior to the increase in the benefit, the board received £5 per month and the pensioner £1 10s.
