Mr J. Quin, of Lower Hutt, is the guest of Mr and Mrs M. J. Jackson, of Masterton. The Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Marketing, will return to Wellington today from the north. The Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Public Works, will return to Wellington today from the South Island. Mr and Mrs J. H. G. Spink, Johnstone Street, Masterton, wish to announce the engagement of their only daughter Florence Margaret, to Flight Lieutenant Geffrey Rupert Sloan, R.N.Z.A.F., only son of the late Captain and Mrs Sloane, of Kent, England. Messrs A. McDonald and W. A. lorns were nominated yesterday as Wairarapa district representatives on the Electoral Committee of the Meat Board. This course was agreed to at a meeting of farmers held in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The death is reported in a Press Association telegram from Blenheim of Mr Arthur M. Thomson, aged 47 years, a prominent business man, who was well known in bowling circles in Wellington and Nelson. For many years he was secretary of the Marlborough Bowling Centre. Mr A .E. Prentice, secretary of the Wairarapa Returned Services’ Association, was congratulated by the president of the N.Z.R.S.A., Mr Perry, M.L.C., at last night’s session of the association’s Dominion conference on his having held the office for 25 years. Todav Mr Andrew Liddell, of Winton is celebrating his hundredth birthday. He was born in Paisley, Scotland, and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1858. From 1869 to 1882 he was in business in Christchurch as a saddler. He was mayor of Winton fiom 1896 to 1898. It is stated that he is the oldest Odd Fellow in the world, having been a member for 76 years. Mr Frank Thompson, of 5 Elizabeth Street, Masterion, is today celebrating his 85th birthday. Mr Thompson came to Masterton when Queen Street was a mere cart track through the bush, and Bannister’s little store was the only trading house. To be able to cut his own firewood and plant a large section of land in vegetables are feats of which Mr Thompson can be justly proud. In full possession of all his faculties Mr Thompson follows current events with ' the greatest interest. At the annual conference of the Dominion Council of Commercial Growers held in Wellington yesterday the following officers were elected: —President, Mr B. V. Cooksley (Hutt); vicepresidents, Messrs A. E. Brough (Nelson), O. G. Brightwell (Auckland), W. Copping (Levin), T. E. Kennedy (Canterbury); secretary-treasurer, Mr L. V. Phillips (Lower Hutt); directors, Messrs R. Denniston (Pukekohe), C. R. Reader (Auckland), F. Ferretti (Hutt), J. J. Hume (Manawatu), A. B. Inglis (Nelson), E. Scarrott (Napier), A. C. Tucker (Wanganui), F. M. Wright (Outram), S. Nicholls (Greytown), G. A. Knowles (Canterbury), E. Rousscll (Marlborough); delegate to N.Z. Farmers’ Union, Mr Cooksley.
