PERRY STREET TREES

COUNCIL REVERSES DECISION. . The decision of the Masterton Borough Council to cut down every second tree in Perry Street was set aside a i last night’s meeting, when it was agreed to leave the trees as they were. This action followed on a petition from residents of the locality, protesting against the cutting down of the trees. Councillor C. E. Grey moved that the trees should be left as they are. Seconding the motion, Councillor G. W. Morice said the wishes of the residents of the street should be respected. Councillor R. Russell said he had been approached by a number of residents asking that the trees should be left there. Observing that the trees had already been pruned, Councillor W. Kemp said many of them were not street trees. He suggested taking three feet off the top of them. He admitted that the trees were too close. Slating that he had been asked by people to take them out, Councillor H. E. Gardner said he had been asked by just as many to leave them there. The committee had unanimously decided that every second tree should come out'and the council had- unanimously agrqed to that course. He saw no reason to change the original decision. Councillor C. E. Grey said it was not clear who wanted the trees out. He had understood that a number of the , residents had wanted the trees taken out but he had found out later that 98 'per cent of the people wanted the trees left in. Councillor Grey’s motion was carried by an overwhelming majority.
