STRUCK BY TRAIN
RESERVIST FATALLY INJURED. ACCIDENT NEAR PAREMATA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Struck at about 10.15 a.m. yesterday near Paremata by the Wellington-Na-pier express, Corporal A. J. Gapes, aged 47, a National Reservist, received injuries from which he died in the ambulance on the way to the Wellington Hospital. Corporal Gapes volunteered for service in the Great War and sailed with the Main Body of the Ist N.Z.E.F. He held the rank of sergeant, and took part in the fighting at Gallipoli and Passchendaele, where he was wounded and was awarded the D.C.M. for gallantry.
Corporal Gapes again volunteered at the outbreak of the present war and had since served in the National Reserve.
Formerly a contractor by occupation, he resided at Seaview Terrace, Northland, and is survived by his wife and three children.
