BELIEVED SUNK
JAPANESE AIRCRAFT CARRIER TORPEDOED BY AMERICAN SUBMARINE. OTHER NAVAL SUCCESSES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright I LONDON, January 26. A Japanese aircraft carrier has been torpedoed by an American submarine and is believed to have been sunk. A Navy Department communique issued in Washington states that United States naval forces have scored further successes in the Macassar Strait. Heavy hits were made on enemy destroyers and transports. While it is impossible to estimate the total damage the known results are substantial. Additional reports state that an American submarine torpedoed an enemy aircraft carrier, which is believed to have been sunk.
A 5000-ton enemy ship has been sunk by American torpedo boat attacks in the Philippines.
