Mr G. D. Griffiths, architect, has been elected unopposed to the Christchurch City Council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Major T. Milliken.

Mr M. J. Gresson, barrister, Christchurch, has been appointed a member of the special tribunal established under the National Service Emergency Regulations. The engagement is announced of Eileen Patricia, only daughter of Mrs and the late Mr A. M. De very, Victoria Street, Masterton, to Lionel Harold, only son of Mr and Mrs W. Wallis, Glen Rowan, Tiraumea.

The funeral took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon of Mrs H. G. Adams. Services at the residence and cemetery were conducted by the Rt. Rev. John Davie and the Rev. A. T. Thompson. There was a large and representative attendance. The pallbearers were Messrs J. McGregor, H. W. Robinson, N. McGregor, and the Rev. R. Miller.

Advice' has been received of the death in Kokinia Hospital, Piraeus, Greece, of Lance-Bombardier William Richard Jourdain, 2nd N.Z.E.F. He was educated at Kilbirriie School, Rongotai College, Nelson College, and Victoria University College, where he studied accountancy. He was in the service of the Commercial Bank, but he transferred to the Reserve Bank on its formation.

The following Masterton candidates passed the recent State final examination for pupil nurses: J. S. Robinson, D. L. Rowlands, G. K. Smith, R. E. Walker (honours in nursing technique). In the state maternity nurses examination the following Masterton candidates passed: D. I. Dickson, E. M. Mannell, M. F. Rea, D. L. White. Miss Phyllis N. Holloway, who is well known in Masterton, passed her final State examination at the Wellington Hospital. One of Hawke’s Bay’s best-known sheepfarmers, Mr John Lyons, died at his home in Hautapu yesterday morning. On leaving school he took up sheepfarming at Greenhill with his stepfather, the late Mr Archibald McLean. In 1914 Mr Lyons married Miss Mary Harding, of Mt Vernon. He carried on farming at both Greenhill and Hautapu. His main sporting interest was in polo, in which he was a prominent player, having frequently represented Hawke’s Bay. He played in the New Zealand side against Australia. He leaves a wife, one son and one daughter. The funeral of the late Mrs A. Meikle, which took place in Masterton this morning was largely attended. Requem Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church by the Father Dillon and the service at the cemetery was conducted by Father N. Moore. Among the many floral tributes were wreaths from the Masterton Collie Club, Messrs McCalmont Bros., and the staff of the F.C.D.C. The pall-bear-ers were Messrs A. Levick, W. Falconer (sons-in-law), R. Falconer (grandson), G. Thomson and C. J. Macdonald (Masterton Collie Club), and A. McCalmont.

The death has occurred in the Palmerston North Hospital of a former wellknown Foxton resident, Miss Catherine Harvey Sewell, at the age of 78 years. Miss Sewell was born at Gravesend, England, and came to New Zealand as a child. Settling in Greymouth for some years, Miss Sewell received her education there, and later went to live in Aramoho. Her mother dying, she was faced with the task of bringing up a young family, and on the youngest member marrying she went to live with Mrs and the late Mr J. K. Hornblow, spending some years in Greytown, and going to Foxton in 1906. She was a member of the staff of the “Manawatu Herald” from 1906 until 1925.

At Masterion yesterday afternoon the funeral took place of the late Mr Peter R. Clarke. Services at Hyde’s Chapel and the graveside were conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich. Among others, wreaths were received from the staff of Messrs T. Wagg and Co., Ltd., the management of Messrs T. Wagg and Co., the South Featherston Dairy Co., the Grey town Odd Fellows' Lodge, the staff of the W.F.C.A. Ltd., Greytown, and Mr D. Davey. Mr R. C. Jordan represented the Painters’ Union. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. McGill, G. Whiting (Greytown Odd Fellows’ Lodge), F. Knowles, B. McCarthy, D. Davey and R. C. Baikie (Masterton Odd Fellows’ Lodge).
