TERRITORIAL AND OTHER APPEALS SITTING OF WAIRARAPA MANPOWER COMMITTEE. MASTERTON AND DISTRICT CASES DEALT WITH. The Wairarapa Manpower Committee sat in Masterton today when the appeals dealt with included some regarding service arising out of the mobilisation of the Territorial Force. The chairman, Mr T. Jordan, presided. There were also present: Messrs L. T. Daniell, F. J. Lewis (deputy for Mr F. Cole) and the secretary, Mr G. F. Whitlock. An appeal by the estate of Chas. Matthews (Mr A. C. Gawith) against the calling up of Reginald Horsbrough Matthews, farm manager, for duration service was adjourned sine die. An appeal against overseas service by Winifred Jane Millington (Mr Gawith) on behalf of Victor Hibbard, farm manager, was adjourned sine die. Mr Gawith' said that Hibbard bad acquired a farm property after being graded as Class II for overseas service. He had subsequently received remedial treatment and had been regraded as Class I. Although the reservist was keen to enter camp he now had to look after his farm. Fixation of Territorial service in respect to Kenneth Frederick Joblin (Mr Gawith) whose appeal against overseas service was adjourned sme die by the No. 4A Armed Forces Appeal Board, was considered. In view of the changed conditions of Territorial service today the committee adjourned the appeal sine die. Appeals in respect to Territorial mobilisation, on the grounds of public interest were dealt with as follow: —

Appeals by E. C. Holmes (Mr Gawith), for B. McMaster, shepherd, and James Beattie for James F. Beattie, farm hand, were adjourned sine die. An appeal by George Shaw, farmer, for Eric Sanson, farm hand, was dismissed.

Harry Lethaby, dry cleaner, appealed against service on the grounds of undue hardship. The appeal was dismissed. An appeal by W. J. Palamontain, for Harry William Golder, printer’s apprentice, was dismissed. William Allan Wardell, farmer, applied for exemption from service until March 15 on the grounds of public interest. The appeal was granted. Sine die adjournments were granted in respect of appeals lodged by R. 0. and T. W. Shaw for Rex O. Shaw, clerk, and A. H. Bogle for Elliot Grey Kent, bridge foreman. An application by H. Hope Cross for three months’ exemption from service to enable him to wind up his business prior to entering the Air Force, was granted. i An appeal by O. W. Willis, farmer, was adjourned sine die, the reservist to join the Home Guard. An application by Donald K. McLean, farmer, for postponement of service to enable urgent farm work to be carried out prior to his entering the Air Force was granted.

A request for postponement of service until January 31, 1942, by A. D Carson for Alfred Neavy, shepherd, was agreed to.
