BOMB DAMAGE
TO JAPANESE WARSHIPS AT DAVAO GREATER THAN AT FIRST , REPORTED. MORE THAN ONE DESTROYER SUNK. WASHINGTON, January 6. An Army communique issued at 5 p.m. states: “Additional information concerning yesterday’s successful bombing attack against the Japanese naval units at Davao (in the southen Philippines) indicates that the damage which was inflicted to enemy vessels was probably greater than was at first reported. “The Japanese fleet comprised one battleship, five cruisers, six destroyers, 12 submarines and 12 transports. Three direct hits were scored on the battleship. It now seems probable that more than one destroyer was sunk, while numerous hits on other vessels caused extensive damage.” FOOD RATIONING STARTING SOON IN JAPAN. IN HEAVILY-POPULATED PROVINCES. The Columbia Broadcasting System has intercepted a Tokio broadcast, announcing that drastic food rationing will begin on February 1 in six of Japan’s most heavily populated provinces. The following Far East war communique has been received from Singapore: —“Yesterday, on the northern front in lower Perak, enemy activities were slight, our positions remaining unchanged. Early this morning the enemy put in strong attacks on this front, supported by armoured fighting vehicles, making some penetration at one point. “Enemy air activity has been considerable. “There is nothing further to report from the Selangor area. “In Pahang withdrawal of our forces has continued, according to plan. Enemy aircraft attacked Klang yesterday. No damage or casualties are reported. “There was an alert in Singapore yesterday evening, but no bombs were dropped.”
