PRISONERS OF WAR
NEW ZEALAND CHAPLAINS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 5. News that three well-known chaplains recently reported missing with the New Zealand Forces in the Western Desert were prisoners of war is contained in a letter received on Saturday from the Rev. J. W. McKenzie, Epsom, the senior Presbyterian chaplain. Mr McKenzie’s letter is dated December 13, and he states that the senior chaplain, Bishop Gerard, “was seen in a truck after the time he was reported missing, and it is thought that he joined up with a unit still in action." Mr McKenzie says the Rev. R. G. McDowall, Remuera, and the Rev. K. J. Watson, both Presbyterian chaplains, are known to be prisoners. Mr McKenzie added: “We have great hopes of recapturing most of our prisoners.” It is thought quite possible some or all of these men may prove to be among those recaptured and released at Bardia.
