SHORTAGE OF POTATOES
POSITION AT PUKEKOHE. LITTLE HELP IN RELIEVING FAMINE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PUKEKOHE, January 5. The Pukekohe district at present can offer but little help in relieving what has almost become a potato famine. Only a very few growers here have any potatoes ready to dig and, by direction, these are going to official purchasers such as the armed forces and .the hospitals. Several hundred bags were dug today, but by direction of the Food Controller none were released to help meet a heavy volume of orders from merchants and retailers. However, it is expected that the supply coming to hand tomorrow will jjo to the trade.
