The result of extensive inquiries in an endeavour to sceure a method of combating convolvulus is given in a report by Mr J. G. C. MacKenzie, superintendent of the Hastings borough reserves, who suggests that nothing less than drastic measures will cope with the menace, which was increasing at an alarming rate throughout the Dominion. The measures he mentioned were that the local authorities should be given the power to (1) require all property owners on whose land the weed is found to remove all trees, hedges and other growth in which the weed is growing, and either keep the land cultivated or sprayed regularly. If the owner is unable to do this, the local authorities should have the power to do this at the property owner’s expense; and (2) that it be an offence for any nursery to supply a plant taken from convolvulusinfested grounds. Local authorities, he said, would require that power if con-| volvulus was to be brought under con- 1 trol.
