DEADLY FOLLY

, ON PART OF BRITISH SAILORS INFORMATION IN CLUMSY LETTER CODES. SECURED ON SOME OCCASIONS BY U-BOATS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. “British sailors have been telling the enemy where to sink them,” says the “Daily Herald’s” naval commentator. “Clumsy codes in letters home have fallen into the hands .of U-boat commanders, giving away information about convoy movements. This news has been sent to Berlin and then more U-boats and sometimes the Luftwaffe have kept rendezvous with the convoys. Only innocent folly made seamen fix up prearranged codes with their families. The writer states that he has been told of family codes in which names like Nellie Smith stand for Nova Scotia, or Salvation Army for South America. Ships’ censors will soon be carrying out orders demanding ruthless blue-pencilling.
