KNITTED GLOVES

DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING ON TWO NEEDLES. ABBREVIATIONS TO BE READ BEFORE WORKING. Directions are given below for knitting gloves on two needles. The following abbreviations are used:— K., knit plain; p., purl; st. stitch; inc., increase (by knitting in the front and back of a st.); tog., together; s.s. stock-ing-stitch (k. on the right side and p. back). Directions in brackets are worked .the number of times stated after the brackets.

You will need a skein of embroidery wool in yellow for outlining the fingers, and some small craps- of different bright colours for the embroidered flowers. (The first inc. is always in the 28th st. and the second inc. is 2 sts. farther along the row than in the last inc. row. The odd numbered rows are k. rows. In the even-numbered rows the first and the last 27 sts. consist of (p. 1, k. 1, p. 1) 9 times, and the middle sts. are p. sts.) '

The thumb.—Next row: K. 45, cast 1 on 4, turn. Next Row: P. 21. Work 26 rows of s.s. on the 21 sts. Next Row: (K. 2, k. 2 log.) 5 times, k. 1. P. 1 row. Next Row:, K. 2 tog. to the end. P. 1 row.

Cut the wool, leaving enough for sewing. Pass through the sts. and draw up closely, then sew the seam of the thumb. The hand continued. —Holding the work with the right side facing, pick up and k. 4 sts. along the cast-on edge of 4 sts. at the base of the thumb, k. the remaining 28 sts. Next row: (P. 1, k. 1, p. 1) 20 times. Next row: K. plain. Repeat the last two rows 6 times, then the first row again.

The First Finger. —Next row: K. 38, cast on 4, turn. Next Row: P. 20. Work 30 rows of s.s. on these 20 sts. and finish the top as the thumb.

The Second Finger. —With right side facing, pick up and k. 3 sts. along the cast-on edge of 4 sts. at the base of the first finger, k. the next 7 sts., cast on 3, turn and p. 20. Work 34 rows of s.s. on these 20 sts. and finish the top as thumb.

The Third Finger.—Pick up and k. 3 sts. along the cast-on edge of 3 sts. at the base of the second finger, k. the next 7 sts., cast on 3, turn up and p. 20. Work 32 rows of s.s. and finish the top. The Fourth Finger.—Pick up and k. 3 sts. along the cast-on edge of 3 sts. of the third finger, k. the remaining 8 sts., turn and p. 19. Work 26 rows, and finish the top. Now sew seams of fingers and side of the hand and press.
