WAY OPENED
UNION AGAINST AXIS AMERICAN INVITATION. TO PEOPLE OF OCCUPIED COUNTRIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) WASHINGTON, January 4. The United States has opened the way for Free French adherence to the anti-Axis declaration with the following statement issued today by the State Department:— “In order that liberty-loving peoples who are silenced by military force may have an opportunity to support the principles of the declaration by the united nations, the Government of the United States, as a depository for that declaration, will receive statements of adherence to its principles from appropriate authorities which are not Governments.” The Associated Press of America says that while there is no official elaboration of the statement, it is regarded as an unmistakable gesture and invitation to the Free French. Likewise, it appears to open the way for adherence by anti-Nazi organisations of Germans, Italians and Japanese, or of nationals of the Axis-controlled nations such as Denmark, Rumania and Hungary.
