CARE OF LIVE STOCK FARMERS' UNION ACTION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Greytown branch of the Farmers’ Union held a special meeting when committees were appointed to arrange for the care of live stock in an emergency. The chairman (Mr W. G. K. Wiggins) outlined the conditions which might arise owing to many farmers being in the Home Guard and E.P.S. Captain A. G. Nisbet represented the battalion commander and answered several questions. It was finally decided to divide the district into areas, and representatives were appointed to collect information as to the labour available in each area. THE LATE MR W. GATES LARGELY ATTENDED FUNERAL. There was a large attendance al the funeral of the late Mr William James Gates, which took place at Greytown' yesterday. A short service was held at St. Luke’s Church where the deceased had been a church warden for many years. On leaving the church the casket was placed on the Fire Brigade engine, members of the Brigade forming a bodyguard under Superintendent J. Wood. The late Superintendent Gates joined the Greytown Fire Brigade in 1900, and was a member till October, 1938, when he retired and left to reside in Dannevirke. A large number of the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows attended the funeral. Among others, floral tributes were received from the following: Greytown Borough Council, Greytown Fire Brigade. Featherston Fire Brigade, Carterton Fire Brigade. Waipukurau Fire Brigade, Greytown Odd Fellows, Dannevirke Odd Fellows, Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild, Greytown Bowling Club and St. Luke's Church. Personal Items. Mr J. Petherick, a member of the Wellington Hospital Board, is the guest of his daughter, Mrs W. G. K. Wiggins. Kurawhiti Street. Messrs A. and J. Emmett, of Ohaupo, Waikato, are the guests of Mr and Mrs N. S. McLeod, Hastwell Street. The Greytown motor cycle unit of the Home Guard paid a surprise visit to their leader, Mr H. (“Tui”) Morgan on Thursday evening and presented him with a wristlet watch. Mr Morgan is now a member of the Territorial army and is attached to a specialist unit. Mr Morgan was instrumental in the formation of the motor cycle unit, having been an expert in motor cycle riding for many years. TOWN HALL TOMORROW'S PROGRAMME. Showing tomorrow night will be the most entrancing musical comedy ever filmed, “Magic in Music,” with Allan Jones and Susanna Foster in the chief roles. (Recommended by the Censor for adults).
