JAPANESE CLAIMS
DESTRUCTION OF SHIPS & AIRCRAFT IN PHILIPPINE WATERS, JUBILATION OVER CAPTURE OF MANILA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 4. The Tokio radio stated that the Imperial Headquarters, summing up the Japanese naval operations in Philippine waters so far reported, claimed the destruction of 3GO enemy aircraft, four destroyers, seven submarines and five other vessels. In addition it was claimed that two auxiliary vessels were destroyed and thirty smaller craft damaged. The headquarters statement said that 103 of the planes were shot down 'in aerial combats, the balance being destroyed on the ground. The Japanese Press has jubilantly banner-lined: “Manila Completely Occupied,” predicting a similar fate for Corregidor Isfand and adding: “Only Singapore remains of the Greater East Asia objectives.”
