PERSONAL
Dr. A. C. Keys (son of Mr and Mrs L. Keys, formerly of Featherston), lecturer in modern languages at Victoria University College, who was recently selected as professor of modern languages at Auckland University College, has accepted the appointment. The following resident medical staff appointments have been agreed to by the Palmerston North Hospital Board: —Resident medical officer, Dr. T. O. Gilbert; senior house surgeon, Dr. T. H. Fisher; junior house surgeons, Dr. E. J. Velvin, Dr. S. deC. Barclay, Dr. D. U. Steven, Dr. N. J. Hunter and Dr. M. M. Beedie.
Lieutenant-Colonel G. .H. Clifton, M.C., N.Z.S.C., officer commanding the Divisional Engineers, 2nd N.Z.E.F., has been promoted to colonel and seconded to the British Army as chief engineer to the 30th Corps. He will act in an advisory capacity to the corps commander. Colonel Clifton, who was born at Napier, attended the Pahiatua school.
Professor J. Stone, professor of law at Auckland University College, tendered his resignation at a meeting of the college council on Monday. Professor Stone, whose appointment as professor of jurisprudence and international law at Sydney University was recently the subject of controversy there, expressed deep regret at leaving the college within three years of his appointment, but explained that the chair in Sydney was. exceptional in that it offered special scope in the fields in which he had specialised.
