GENERAL BLAMEY

ATTENDS RACE MEETING AFTER REMARKS ABOUT CARNIVAL SPIRIT. SOME QUESTIONS & REPLY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 18. Following his recent remarks about the “carnival spirit of Australia,” General Sir Thomas Blarney, General Officer Commanding the A.1.F., today was asked awkward questions concerning his presence at the Williamstown Cup meeting on Saturday. General Blarney’s reply was: “I received an invitation to attend the races and had no hesitation in accepting it. Let me say that I am not in favour of killing all forms of enjoyment. I see no reason why older men cannot carry on here, but it seems decidedly out of place to see crowds of young men attending sports meetings and watching other young men play. “There are sterner things for them to do. On the other hand, it would be deplorable if racing were extinguished in this or any other British community.”
