BOWLING CLUB CONTESTS ON SATURDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance of members on the Carterton Bowling Club's green on Saturday afternoon and despite the heavy wind that blew, some very interesting games were played on a well-prepared green. The afternoon tea provided by the club was presided over by the Misses Newbould who were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr Gordon Hughan referred to the illness of Mesdames W. Whyte, E. Smith and A. King and a vote of sympathy was passed to them by members. The following were the scores in the games played: —Dudson, Boden, Curtis, Harp (s) beat Adams, Beaven, W. Hart, Hughan (s), 15/14; Compton, Booth, A. Thompson, Harrington (s) beat Irwin, Colson, W. Steven, Riggs (s), 21/17; Rayner, McCarty, Foster, Whyte (s) beat Kilmister, Tomlin, Underhill, Aplin (s), 26/20; Clark, Newbould, Bain (s) beat G. Steven, DeLacey, Stent (s), 17/13. The ladies’ club had a very enjoyable afternoon’s play, marked improvement being shown in their bowling. Messrs Daysh, A. Thompson, DeLacey and Tucker (s) will play a game this week for the champion rink badges against Greytown. Personal Items, Mr A. J. King, who has been in the employ of the Carterton. Post Office for some years, left this morning to take up duties in the Wellington telephone exchange. At the weekend members of the Belvedere Patriotic Committee visited the residence of Mr D. J. McAulay, Carrington, where Mr A. E. Reid made a presentation to Mr Don McAulay, who left today to join a specialist unit of the New Zealand Forces. Mr McAulay, whose health was toasted suitably returned thanks. A Happy Gathering. The Parkvale Hall was the scene of a very happy gathering on Saturday night when settlers from all parts of the district were present to honour Sergt.-Pilot C. C. Deller and to tender a “parcel evening” to his wife (nee Miss Talyforth). Dancing was enjoyed until midnight to music supplied by Mrs V. .J. Ashton’s Orchestra, much - .appreciated extras being played by f Misses V. Sorensen, V.< Irwin, L. Hoop..er.and L. Hopkins. The M’s.C. were ...Messrs V. J. Ashton and C. Jensen I Junr. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Feast and Mr R. Andrews, and a spot waltz by Miss Askew and Mr Bassett. During an interval in proceedings, . Mr C. Jensen Senr., in an appropriate speech on behalf of the residents m the district, asked Sergeant-Pilot Deller to accept a wristlet watch., Mr Jensen then requested Mrs Deller to accept and open the many parcels which had been brought to the gathering. Sergeant-Pilot Deller returned thanks on behalf of his wife. Boy Injured. Andrew James McKenzie, son of Mi H. J. McKenzie, of Chester Road, Carterton, was cycling to school when the forks of his bicycle broke and he fell heavily to the roadway. He was assisted into Mr D. Jenson’s home in North High Street, where injuries to his face and ear were temporarily diessed. He was later taken by his father to Dr. Wells for treatment. Competitions for Children. The Central Committee of the Wairarapa Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Club has decided to hold the Wairarapa calf and lamb compettiions on the P. and A. grounds at Carterton on December 11, at 11 a.m. The judging at the schools will commence on Monday, November 17. The group judging will be completed by December 9, and the school and group winners will meet on December 11 to compete in the championship honours. _____
