In Berlin there have been great celebrations in aid of “winter help,” and citizens have been pestered ceaselessly to contribute. Berliners tell a story of how when Hess arrived in Scotland the Scotch fled to the hills. Inevitably the question “Why?” is asked. “They were afraid he’d ask them to contribute to ‘winter help’,” came the retort.
