CHARACTER WILL TELL
WHEN THE LAST STRAW COMES. Can the 70,000,000 in Great Britain and the Dominions, backed by India and by the resources and skill of 130,000,000 in the United States of America, be overthrown? asks Mr R. G. Menzies, the ex-Australian Prime Minister, writing in the “Daily Mail.” Not if they fight and labour as one man! Not if they back their faith with their works! Not if they remember always that prayer and sweat are the ingredient of noble achievement! The disciplined herd who move to the orders of a dictator may have (why should we deny it?) a mass courage; an organised and organising power; all the advantage of years of felonious preparation for the assault. But their spirit is artificial; it does not derive its strength from the sweet soil of true humanity; I do not believe that it can survive the test. For when the last strain comes, it is character which counts. The honest heart gives a strength which no dictator’s frenzied i eloquence can create. j
