PERVERSION OF THE YOUNG. How are the Germans to be fitted into a world of free men? asks Professor C. B. Fawcett in his book, “The Bases of a World Commonwealth.” There are seventy millions of them in Europe; and when the war is over they will still be there, in the heart of the European Peninsula. Yet none of their neighbours, who know them best, will feel able to trust a German State or Government in this generation. The belief in force, the false pride of “race,” the lust for power and conquest, and the intolerant hatred of ether peoples, with which the German youth have been so sedulously indoctrinated, must be fully exorcised before any other people again trust them. This perversion of the young is the essential evil of Nazi and Fascist rule. It can be reversed only by an education as thorough as their schooling by Nazi teachers and Press propaganda has been . . . The geographical position of Germany makes it impossible for a free world to leave her out of its organisation. She is in (he core of its most important human region. The hope for a free world, depends largely on the active support, of those many Germans who are lovers of freedom, and who are prepared to look on themselves as humans before they are Germans, to put humanity before “Deutschtum.”
