SLOW ADVANCE

AGAINST RESISTANCE THE AUSTRALIAN THRUST AT BEIRUT. HEAVY FIGHTING IN OTHER AREAS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, June 20. Stiff resistance in Syria is reported in the following Cairo communique:— ‘•On all fronts in Syria fighting is continuing. In the coastal area, the Australians are slowly advancing in face of stiff resistance. South of Damascus Free French forces have met a determined counter-attack by numerically superior Vichy troops, but are holding their ground. British and Indian troops in this area made further local advances. The situation at Merjlyun has not yet been fully cleared up and heavy fighting is in progress. In other areas local advances have been made, despite continued resistance by the Vichy troops. “There is no change in the position in Libya or Abyssinia.”
