RAM FAIR

OFFERING OF SOUTHDOWNS YESTERDAY • SATISFACTORY SALE. REPORTED. • AVERAGE PRICES HIGHEST FOR SOME YEARS. Sellers, buyers and auctioneers were well satisfied with the annual Ram Fair of ihe Masterton A. and P. Association, which concluded at Solway yesterday. On an average, the prices yesterday were higher than for some year, though bidding was never spectacular. Passings were rare till late in the afternoon when the consistent interest of the bench slackened a little. The Southdowns, flock and stud, were

in considerably less number than usua and keener competition forced up th< average price. The trend of biddin; was much the same as with the Rom neys on the first day: for the early pen* offers were hard to get but as th< bench filled competition sharpened aiv bids came freely. Again, after lunch, there was a slow start with the slue .Southdowns, but double figure price: mounted as bidding became spirited and it was at this stage that ihe pealfor the day was reached. A shcarlint Southdown ram bred by Gordon S. McLeod. Martinborough, sold at 50 guineas to the Estate of W. H. Buick, “Daisyburn." Best price for a flock Southdown ram was 30 guineas, which was paid by Rupert Reid, for a ram bred by Norman Mclachlan, "Pine Grove,” Rangitumau. Mr. E. C. White secured the top flock price for show pens yesterday, with 16 guineas for a pen of four Southdown rams. Nearly £7O was subscribed at the second day of the fair to the funds of ihe N.Z. Institute for the Blind. Sales were: — FLOCK SOUTHDOWNS. A c. Robert Ness: Five at Glgns. to Mrs. S. E. M. Holmes. A 'c. R. O. Rayner: Five at 2igns.. to the N.Z.
