NON-FERROUS METAL

COLLECTION IN MASTERTON appeal to public. CAMPAIGN TO CLOSE NEXT WEEK. The National Council lor the recla- z mation of waste material is . desirous that the first drive for non-ferrous L, metals should be completed by the end/ of the second week in October. A very fair assortment of materials is coming to hand in Masterton. The primary schools have so far done well, the latest contribution coming from the Te Ore Ore School. “In view of the fact that Hastings has collected 12 tons of non-ferrous metals,” Mr T. A. Russell, Borough Inspector, observes, “I am of the opinion that Masterton could do considerably better than it has done so far. Every pound of metal collected means one pound less to import, as not one of the non-ferrous metals is produced in New Zealand. “There is no question of the materials being sold to dealers at any price,” said Mr Russell. “With the exception of lead and aluminium foil, lead tubes, lead, zinc and brass lamp camps, all the metals must be sent to the Government Railways Workshops at Woburn, and as there is no local demand for the above-mentioned metals all collected in Masterton will be consigned to Woburn. The prices to be paid have been, fixed by Government Order-in-Council in June last. “The committee appeals to the public to further this patriotic effort to the limit during the coming week by every means in their power,” states Mr Russell. “Masterton has always been in the forefront in patriotic efforts and will no doubt uphold its reputation in the coming week.” Material may be brought to the Borough Office, Borough yard, given to the Borough refuse collection men, or if the Quantity warrants it, it will be collected if the donor rings the Borough Inspector, ’phone 1276.
