“OUR NEIGHBOURS THE CARTERS.” The trend to simple, homespun, down-to-earth drama, which has been forging to the lead in public favour, is definitely reflected in “Our Neighbours —the Carters,” Paramount's story of life in a small Ohio town which will be presented tonight at the Cosy Theatre with Frank Craven, Fay Bainter, Edmund Lowe and Genevieve Tobin in the top featured roles. The story of how a crooked boxing racket is smashed is told in Paramount’s “Golden Gloves,” the associate feature. J. Carrol Naish appears in the role of a boxing promoter who exploits/the talents of yound fighters to his own advantage and to the youngsters’ detriment. An enterprising young newspaper reporter, played by Robert Paige, realises the extent of the harm being done, and awaits an opportunity to expose and smash the racket. His chance comes when a lad is killed in one of Naish’s fights. With, the aid of his paper, Paige conducts an amateur contest with Richard Denning, a promising young heavyweight, as the magnet to attract other fighters. In this way Paige hopes to bring the plight of the amateurs before the public eye. Naish’s efforts to smash the crusade and his subsequent downfall provide many exciting moments. The feminine lead in “Golden Gloves” is taken by Jean Cagney (sister of the famous Jimmy Cagney) who is making her screen debut. —
