J. < de Lacey 96. , t WOMEN’S DIVISION ( COMPETITION RESULTS. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in * St Andrew's Hall, Carterton. Mrs H. E. Ordish presiding over a good atten- j dance of members. I A motion of sympathy was passed < to Mesdames R. Madden, J. McLean, W. R. Daysh. A. Daysh. V. Daysh, and J. Allen in connection with their recent bereavements. ■ It was decided that in future month- ( ly meetings be held in the Masonic Hall, this being more central for all members. Mrs L. Maitland gave an interesting 1 report of the Dominion Conference and ’ was accorded a vote of thanks. 1 Another parcel of knitted comforts i for soldiers was handed in by mem- ■ bers. Mrs H. Hodder gave a detailed report on the wool pruchased by the ! branch and the made-up articles that : had been handed in. A number of articles of clothing for J /refugees was received from members and will be forwarded to the proper quarter for distribution. Next Friday has been set aside for i the planting of shrubs and trees at th'e Carterton railway station yards. , The monthly competition resulted as follows:—Best bloom,, Mrs J. Rayner 1. Mrs G. Couper 2; shrub. Mrs K. i Reid 1. Mrs Couper 2. Mrs A. Card was awarded first prize in needlework, for a neatly made child's frock. Afternoon tea served by the hostesses Mesdames J. Taplin, L. Rayner, E. W. Allen. H. Peters and A. Whitehead. The meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem. ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The annual congregational meeting of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was held in Carterton on Monday night. The Rev W. J. Couling. presided over a good attendance. The annual reports of the various organisations were read as follow: — Session report, by Mr A. E. Hack; Carterton Sunday School. Miss Dunn; Gladstone Sunday School, Miss Kerr; West Taratahi Sunday School, Miss Thompson; P.W.M.U.. Mrs J. Fisher; Ladies’ Guild, Mrs J. Fisher; SeniorBible Class, Mrs R. R. Brown; Junior Bible Class. Mr R. R. Brown; Financial. Mr R. R. Brown. The election of officers resulted in the existing Management Committee being re-elected with the addition of Messrs F. Day, W. Martin and J. W. Tomlin. Reference was made to the resignation of Mr R. R. Brown from the position of church treasurer as he had enlisted. Mr J. W. Tomlin is to act as treasurer until the return of Mr Brown. Mr W. Martin, on behalf of the congregation, made eulogistic reference to the work of the Minister, the Rev W. J. Couling, both in and out of the pulpit. This was one occasion, said Mr Martin, on which the congregation could refer with appreciation to the work of the Minister, and he hoped that Mr Couling would feel encouraged by the knowledge that the congregation valued his work and that they felt fortunate in having such an able Minister. A vote of appreciation of Mr Cooling’s services was carried by acclamation. Mr Couling. in his reply, suitably thanked Mr Martin and the congregation. He felt that he. in his turn, owed a debt of gratitude to the congregation for their loyal support to the church, especially those who helped in beautifying the church and in conducting the services. He also thanked Ihe members of the Ladies’ Guild and P.W.M.U. for their great help in assisting the finances, the Superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr H. B. Keenan, and the staff thereof, the Bible Class leaders and the members of the Session and Management Committee. The meeting was followed by a supper served by the ladies. GOLF SATURDAY’S COMPETITIONS. Members of the Carterton Ladies’ Golf Club will play an L.G.U. and club medal round for Mrs Robinson’s trophy on the links at the Carterion racecourse on Saturday. The draw is as follows: — No. 7 tee: Mrs Callender and Mrs Moroney; Mrs Orr and Miss M. Campbell: Mrs Candy and Mrs Murray; Miss C. Berrill and Miss M. Smart. There was a large attendance at the Holloway Street school last evening, the occasion being an exhibition of subjects taken up by the children attending the school from the primary classes upward. The exhibits showed great skill and patient work on the part of the children and were of a standard that would be very hard to beat in any part of New Zealand. Soldier to be Entertained. On Saturday a dance will be tendered to Private N. Kennedy, by residents of Belvedere and district. The evening will be spent in dancing and . supper will be provided by ladies of - the district. The price of admission is Is. Arbor Day. The children of the Carterton District High School celebrated Arbor : Day today by planting trees in the . school grounds under the supervision of the headmaster, Mi' W. Martin. ■ Members of the school committee were I also present. Willows were planted I on the eastern boundary of the school • grounds and English and other trees ■ and shrubs on the northern side. The ; Garden Club attached to the school was responsible for the planting of the ■ trees, and in future will look after • them.
