“SCARFACE.” Tonight will be shown “Scarface,” a dramatic masterpiece based upon the life of the notorious Al Capone. Magnificent acting is only to be expected from Paul Muni and magnificent support comes from George Raft, Ann Dvorak and a superb cast. Tracing the life of a super racketeer, ruthless in his methods it reveals that deep down at heart he is a coward, strong only so long as he has might on his side. Grippingly told it is a picture worth going miles to see. A matrimonial comedy illustrating the difficulties that beset those who purchase their homes on the instalment plan, “Saleslady,” co-starring Anne Nagel and Weldon Heyburn, is the associate feature. Mary, attractive granddaughter of a millionaire mattress manufacturer, determines that her future husband shall love her fur herself alone. Posing as a working girl she gets a job in the mattress department of a big store. Bob Spencer, the senior salesman, falls in love with her and they marry on his slender income, after purchasing their homb on the instalment plan. Later, in trying to improve himself, Bob loses his job with the result that they get behind with their payments and lose everything. Then Mary reveals that she has a rich grandfather, but Bob refuses to have a job made for him and leaves her. Adversity proves a spur’ and Bob makes good. Anne Nagel and Weldon Heyburn are the married couple and they add a charming touch of piquancy to the human hard luck theme. As the rich grandfather, Harry Davenport is a gem and Kenneth Harlan, Doris Rankin and Matty Kemp are more than adequate in supporting roles. The charm of “Saleslady” is it lack of pretence; the moral is there for all to see but only as the basis of refreshing light entertainment.
