OF OLD FASHIONED ‘•FASCINATOR.” Aage Thaarup designed this modern version of the old-fashioned "fascinator.” It is a clever variation on the turban scarf which everyone in London —following the lead set by the Duchess of Kent —adopted last winter. Many women had them .in half a dozen different colours. Materials: 3oz. of Sirdar Shetland 3ply knitting wool; 1 pair No. 9 knitting needles. Abbreviations: K„ knit; p„ purl; sts., stitches; tog., together. Cast, on 3 sts. Ist row: k. 1, p. 1, k. 1. 2nd row: p. 1, k. 1, p. 1. 3rd row: Cast on 3 sts., k. 1. p. 1 to end. 4th row: k. 1, p. 1 to end. sth row: Cast on 3 sts, k. 1, p. 1 to end, ending k. 1. 6th row: p. 1, k. 1 to end. of row. Repeat last 4 rows until there are 57 sts. on the needle. Next row: (p. 1. k. 1) to end of row. Next row: (k. 1, p. 1) to end of row. Next row: (k. 1. p. 1) to end of row. Next row: (p. 1, k. 1) to end of row. Repeat last 4 rows until work measures 24in. on short side. Now starting at short side, and keeping continuity of pattern: Ist row: Work 2 tog., pattern to end. 2nd row: Pattern to last 2 sts., work 2 tog. Repeat last 2 rows twice. 7th row: Cast off G sts., pattern io end. Sth row: Pattern to end of row. Repeat last 2 rows 3 times. 15th row: Cast on 6 sts., pattern to end. 16th row: Pattern to end of row. Repeat last 2 rows 3 times. 23rd row: k. twice in first st., pattern to ena. 24th row: Pattern to last st., k. twice in last st. Repeat last 2 rows twice. Now workin pattern without increasing until short side measures 24in. Starting at short side: Next row: Cast off 3 sts., pattern io end. Next row: Pattern to end. Repeat these 2 rows until all sts. are worked off. Sew up shapings al head and Gin. down back. 1
