LADIES’ AUXILIARY

LOYAL Y.M.C.A. WORKERS. ITEMS FROM ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL REPORT. “So easy is it. to take for granted benefits that have been long with us. that it is difficult to realise just how well-nigh impossible the work of the association would be. without the constant assistance of the Ladies’ Auxiliary," runs a passage in the annual report of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. “As in past years this staunch body of workers has stood loyally behind the directors and the staff in everything that has been undertaken. The auxiliary continued under the able presidency of Mrs G. R. Beecroft, until a few months ago, when she found it necessary to retire on account of illness. 1 We are pleased to report that Mrs Beecroft is now well on the way to renewed health. In addition to organising several special events and assisting in all social functions throughout the year, the auxiliary paid over an amount of £l5 to the association's funds.” Basketball, Referring to basketball, the report states: For the second season in Masterton, indoor basketball was played this year on an inter-house system. Interest in this fine game became very marked and approximately 100 players—both men and girls—took part in the weekly matches. Much credit is due to Messrs R. Costello and D. Leete ! for the great amount of organising work they did in connection with the basketball season; and also to several of the Mormon elders who gave the benefit of their experience in coaching and refereeing. An opportunity was taken, during National Recreation Week, to give a public demonstration of the game in the Municipal Hall. The chief game of the evening between a local men's team and a team of visiting Mormons, provided an unusually fine exhibition and created great interest. Visiting teams competing here during the season were I'ronq Wellington, Hutt Valley and Palmerston North. Masterton teams visited Hutt Valley and also competed in the Dominion Championships held at Wellington. Business Girls’ Club. “An innovation during the winter season," the report proceeds, “was the Business Girls' Keep Fit Club. Members met at 5.15 p.m. on Mondays, had tea together and spent half an hour playing table tennis and other games, before the commencement of the Keep Fit classes. The membership was 19. though not all of these took advantage 1 of the social hour before the class, j The group maintained a keen interest < in the physical work and made a val- i liable contribution to the display pro- i gramme.” ‘
