OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

A RECREATIONAL CENTRE (To the Editor.) Sir,—As the Centennial Exhibition draws to a close, the problem of the disposition of the lofty pavilions is brought nearer to the directorate. We all appreciate the fact that Masterton is without a hall of a size and convenience to be used solely as a recreational centre by sports bodies for the promotion of badminton, indoor basketball, interhouse, physical culture activities. etc. Is there sufficient interest in this district, to obtain a suitable pavilion and transport it, in sections, to Maslerton? With the co-operation of the Trust Lands Trust, a site could be arranged. The Government has professed its willingness to promote and foster sport. An opportunity to do something concrete enabling the purchase of such a building now presents itself. Although the war period is ordinarily inopportune for such a proposal it would be an opportunity lost to pass ever the splendid pavilions which will doubtless be dismantled and sold. Taken up by a federation of sports bodies, advocated (and unfortunately turned down in. the Wairarapa.) by Mr S. McNicol. Physical Welfare and Recreation officer, Department of Internal Affairs, such a proposal should go further than wishful thinking. ; Trusting that the matter will no; slip into oblivion, —I am, etc., C. J. CARLE. Hon. Secretary, Wairarapa Badminton Association. Masterton. April 30.
