At the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Fire Board Mr A. W. White was unanimously re-elected chairman. The death occurred in a private hospital at Wellington yesterday of Mr John Saunders, of Martinborough, at the age of 84 years. Messrs O. Meredith, G. Logan, K. Rendall and E. Rendall (Manawahe, Poverty Bay) are guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton.

Messrs. Grundy, Hollier (Hastings), Tabart, Barrott (Palmerston North), Mason, Thompson, McCorkindale, Ronald (Wellington), are at the Hotel Midland, Masterton. Messrs. J. S. Jenkinson (Palmerston North), H. Sim (Wellington), and James Cappell (Tinui), were recent guests at lhe Prince of Wales Hotel Masterton. Mr. Alf. Dawes, of Blenheim, a former Taranaki and Wairarapa representative footballer, is visiting Masterton, Mr. Dawes played with the Albion seniors in Masterton over thirty-five years ago. Mr P. Murphy, of Gonville. Wanganui. has died at the age of 99 years. Mr Murphy, who was born in Ireland, had lived 65 years in New Zealand. He was married in Wanganui. He is survived by six daughters and four sons. The mayor of Petone. Mr. G. London, was last night granted leave of absence for the duration of the war by his council, as ho will go into camp tomorrow. Cr. J. C. Burns, deputy mayor, will act for Mr. London in his absence. The Hon F. Jones. Minister of Defence, left Wellington for Auckland by aeroplane yesterday to take part in the farewell to the flying-boat Aotearoa on its first commercial flight this morning from Auckland to Sydney. He will return to Wellington by aeroplane today. Dr E. P. Neale, author of "Guide to New Zealand Official Statistics." has been elected president of the Auckland Institute for Education Researcn. Dr Noale was formerly a member of the staff of the Census and Statistics Department and later assistant to the Professor of Economics at Victoria University College. Stationmaster at Wellington during the busiest period experienced by the Railways Department for many years. Mr A. Orton retired on superannuation tit the end of last week after completing 40 years' service. He was appointed stationmaster. Wellington, on May 16, 1938. Mr Orton's successor, Mr R. S. Allwright. was formerly stationmaster at Wanganui. The funeral of the late Mrs H. Brewerton took place al Masterton yesterday afternoon and was largely attended.
