AUCKLAND. September 26

The fire which was burning in the Glen Afton coal mine has now been isolated and is under control. This afternoon searchers recovered the bodies of Richard Ireland, aged 64. William Bell, aged 31. and Raymond Turley, aged 34, three of the 11 men who were overcome by gas on Sunday morning. These three men had gone further into the mine than those whose bodies were found earlier. Search parties found unmistakable signs that Turley had sacrificed hi;own life in an endeavour to save Bell. ASSISTANCE FOR WIDOWS GLEN AFTON COMPANY'S ACTION. WELLINGTON. This Day. Assistance for the widows of the victims of the Glen Afton Collieries. Limited, according to advice received last night by the Acting-Prime Minister. Mr Fraser, from the Minister of Mines. Mr Webb, who visited the mine yesterday. In addition, Dominion Breweries is making a donation to each of the widows. “I am very pleased to advise you that Glen Afton Collieries, Ltd, has undertaken to meet the whole of the funeral expenses of the victims of the recent disaster and in addition the company is arranging to pay the widows full wages for the next three months,” Mr Webb said, in a'telegram to Mr Fraser. “I am also pleased to inform you that Messrs H. J. Kelliher and L. J. Stevens, representing Dominion Breweries, Limited, have an nounced that their firm is donating a cheque for £2O to each of the widows to meet the immediate financial needs of their families.”

The resolution, moved by the Acting-Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and seconded by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Hamilton, was: “That this House deeply deplores the tragic loss of life caused by the mining disaster at Glen Afton on September 24. and expresses its sincere sympathy with the bereaved widows and children in their great sorrow.” When the question was put by the.
