OBITUARY

MR HENRY OSCAR TOOGOOD. A well-known resident of the Wairarapa, Mr Henry Oscar Toogood, died in Masterton last night at the age of 78 years. The late Mr Toogood, who was born in Hobart in 1861 came to Otago as a child with his parents. He was educated at the Tokomairiro Grammar School and left at the age of eight to earn his living. After some years in flax camps and on farms in Southern Otago he became a shepherd on Ben Ohau station in the Mackenzie country, where he spent some years. About 1881 he came to the North Island and was employed for some years by Mr Edwin Meredith at Riversdale Station, Wairarapa. In 1887 Mr Toogood leased a portion of this property. He was a very successful sheep farmer and owned at different times Kohiwai, Waikohi and Waiana, all near the coast He was . a member of the Whareama Road Board for some years up to 1887 and was on the Masterton County Council from 1891 to 1921. About 1925 he sold his coast properties and bought Te Whanga, which was portion of Sir Walter Buchanan’s Tupurupuru property. This he improved considerably and sold two or three years ago to Mr P. J. Borthwick. Mr Toogood travelled a good deal, making numerous trips to Great Britain, the United States, Australia and the Far East. He was a director of several companies, including Messrs Lowes and lorns and Messrs Abraham and Williams, and was a member of the Masonic fraternity. He married first in 1884 Miss Elizabeth James, and secondly, a few years ago, Miss Mabel McLeod. He leaves a widow and one daughter, Mrs A. D. Gillies, of Maraetotara, Hawke’s Bay, besides three brothers, Messrs W. H. Toogood (Invercargill), J. A. Toogood and R. E. Toogood (Palmerston North). The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the residence, 121 Renall Street, at 2.30 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. Members of the Masterton Masonic Lodge No. 19 are requested to attend the funeral.
