THE INDEPENDENCE ISSUE. NATIONAL ASSEMBLY DEBATE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MANILA, September 25. The opening session of a war emergency meeting of the National Assembly unexpectedly debated independence. Assemblyman Joe Romero, a member of the Joint Preparatory Committee and a high councillor in President Quezon's Party, proposed postponing independence in view of the adverse world conditions. The speech aroused strong 'unorganised opposition at first, and the members openly broached the fact that the postponement coincided with the arrival of 14 United States bombers officially sent to assist in the preservation of neutrality.
Mr Romero said, “We talk of ignominy and slavery. We are not slaves but free in all but form. We may be slaves if wo refuse to recognise the logic of contemporary events.”
