GREEN AND GOLD BALL SUPPORT APPRECIATED, (“Times-Age” Special.) The Green and Gold Ball committee met recently when a statement in connection with the ball was submitted and approved. Mr’ Waaka Enoka (president of the Mutual Improvement Association), in commenting favourably on the statement expressed his thanks to all vzho donated goods and otherwise assisted in making the ball the success it was. He especially tendered the thanks of the committee to the Pirinoa Women’s Institute, the local School Committee and to the Kahutara Hall Committee for the help and co-operation given in connection with the queen contest; to Mr Dale, of Martinborough, for free use of globes and connections, and to the Press. Mr Carter supported Mr En oka’s remarks. Improvements Needed. The Pirinoa Hall is classed by the dancing fraternity as one of the best in the Wairarapa, but certain appointments have been unfavourably commented on by the dancing public. In order that these defects might be remedied, it was suggested’at a meeting of a local committee held recently to devise some ways and means of raising the necessary funds to carry out the required improvements. A meeting is to be convened early in the new year and it is expected that residents of the district will readily give their hearty Support to any project that will be eventually decided upon. Complaint by Motorists. Improvements to the Otaraia-Mar-tinborough highway are now being made, and in wet weather the road is well nigh impassable to traffic. The authorities are being condemned for the lack of foresight in not erecting notices at some distance from the work notifying the motoring public of the improvements to the road which were under way. Recently several cars and lorries have had to obtain the services of a caterpillar tractor from a nearby farmer to pull their vehicles out of the bog. A lorry loaded bobby calves was recently held up for hours helplessly bogged and it was with great difficulty extricated; and again the farmer’s caterpillar had to leave his own work to pull the lorry out. In some quarters it is held that at the least the authorities should compensate the farmer for loss of time and inconvenience. Motorists consider that had notices been posted up at certain points they would certainly have abstained from travelling on that section of the road. Successful Bazaar. A bazaar was held in the local hall tecently. There was a large attendance of residents and visitors. The receipts were considered to be most satisfactory. School Committee. A meeting of the local School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, there being present: Messrs McIntosh (chairman), Sutton, Duggan, Riwai and Carter. Accounts totalling £9 were passed for payment. The statement of accounts in connection with a recent function were submitted by the secretary and considered very satisfactory. Whitebait at Lake Ferry. It is reported that whitebait have made their appearance at the Lake Ferry. Flounders are also reported t< be plentiful. Lambing Season. Lambing in this district is well forward and percentages will in some cases be ahead of last season. Owing to the wet weather the growth of grass has been backward. Personal Items. Mr Russell Hall, of the Prisons Department, who has been spending his furlough with his parents, has returned to Taupo. Mr and Mrs Stan. Thomas, who are on holiday in the Taumarunui district, are expected to return home on Saturday. Miss Rosnell, who was the guest oi her grandmother, Mrs Ddggan. for the past six months, has returned to Nelson. Mr and Mrs Victor Saunders, who have been in Rotorua for some months for the benefit of Mr Saunders’s health, are expected to return home at the end of the month. Mr John Cowan will leave early next week to take up his residence in Feilding for a few months.
