GERMAN SUBMARINE WARFARE BRITISH FREIGHTER LOST. FORTY-ONE MEMBERS OF CREW NOT TRACED. (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) LISBON, September 7. The British freighter Manaar was sunk by an explosion in the Atlantic. At least two persons were killed and four wounded. Three lifeboats, with forty-one members of the crew, are untraced. Survivors declare that the steamer was torpedoed without warning at 7.30 a.m. on Wednesday. A submarine came to the surface while the abandoning of the ship was going on and fired on and destroyed a lifeboat, when one person was killed and four wounded, of whom one died on the rescue ship Mars. It is reported that there are 29 survivors.
