THREAT TO WARSAW
FORTIFICATIONS IN HANDS OF GERMANS ORDERLY RETREAT MADE BY POLES. CITY PARTLY DESTROYED. LONDON. September G. A message from Warsaw states that the city’s fortifications are reported to have fallen into German hands after fierce fighting. The Poles are retreating southeastward in orderly fashion. Diplomatic circles in Budapest report that Warsaw has been partly destroyed under heavy German shelling and continuous air raids. The Government has already evacuated the city, and is believed to have gone to Lublin. An unconfirmed report says that the Chief of the Polish General Staff, Marshal Smigly-Rydz, has offered his resignation. BERLIN BOMBED ATTACK BY POLISH AIR FORCE. CITY UNDER BLACK-OUT. LONDON. September 5. The Polish radio announces that 30 Polish planes bombed Berlin and returned to Warsaw without loss, states a Paris message. The Polish agency in Warsaw repeats the report, but the British Information Bureau has no knowledge of it. The Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says that Berlin is under a black-out, but there was no sign of hostile planes at 11.40. GERMAN BOMBING STATEMENT IN COMMONS. USE OF GAS NOT REPORTED OFFICIALLY. (Received This Day, 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, September G. The Foreign Under-Secretary (Mr R. A. Butler) in the House of Commons, said the German bombing in Poland was generally aimed against military objectives. There had been some civilian casualties. The use of gas was not reported officially.
