CLAY BIRD SHOOTING

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING SEVERAL SWEEPSTAKES DECIDED YESTERDAY. EIG EVENT BEING HELD TODAY. The North Island clay bird championships were commenced on the Masterton Club's ground yesterday. The adverse weather conditions affected the attendance so much that the club abandoned the big open handicap shoot, and substituted sweepstakes in its place. The following are the results of yesterday's events:— Five Bird Sweepstake: W. G. Rae (19 yardsi shot all his birds and took first money. C. E. Gray (1G) and G. V. Edge (16) divided second money with four each. Nine Bird Sweepstake: L. Meredith (16) got all his birds -and took first place. C. E. Grey with 8 took second, and H. Belk (17) and J. Gallagher (18) with 7 each divided third money. In the third shoot C. Webber with one down, took first place, and G. V. Edge. Jim McKenzie and A. Warren,, divided second and third money. The fourth sweep was won by J. Gallagher (12) who shot all his birds, with C. E. Grey and Jack McKenzie dividing second and third money. Five Track System: In this event J. Dobson took first place with one down, and C. E. Grey, E. Benton and R. Buick divided the remainder of the prize money. Today the North Island Championship, off 21 yards will be decided, when it is expected a large number of shooters will be taking part. TODAY’S EVENTS FIVE-BIRD EYE-OPENER. In the five-bird eye-opener match fired this morning there were 25 entries. Messrs C. Benton, G. V. Edge. W. G. Rae and J. Syme who all shot the possible and divided the sweepstake. North Island Championship. The 21-bird North Island Championship. cfT 21 yards is at present in progress. There are 23 competitors and visibility is poor. At the end of the 12 th round J. Syme (Dannevirke) was the only competitor who had shot all birds. W. G. Rae and J. McKenzie were one down.
