ANTARCTIC LANDS

Q ADVOCACY OF BRITISH ACTION IN VIEW OF COMPETING CLAIMS. POSSESSIONS THAT MAY BE LOST. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 30. Mr Ernest W. Walker, a member of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1937-39, urges that in view of the despatch of Admiral Byrd’s American expedition to establish and permanently occupy three colonies, Britain should consolidate her interests, starting at the end of September, because she would lose her possessions in the Western Ross Sea Dependency if America established a third colony in Little America, some hundreds of miles within the area of the dependency. The cost of a British expedition would be £50,000 which is not yet forthcoming. Changes in sovereignty in the Antarctic might seriously affect the ten million sterling British whaling industry. Germany had made an Antarctic claim early in 1939. Russia and Japan were sending out expeditions in the coming season.
